Art, culinary delights, shopping and more: Mitte, Kassel's city centre district

A mix of art, culture and urban life makes Kassel's city centre unique. You'll find many important museums here, as well as fascinating documenta works of art. In Kassel's main shopping street Königsstrasse, you can also shop to your heart's content. Plus, the district boasts plenty of cafés and restaurants that serve regional specialities as well as international delicacies. The idyllic Karlsaue park with the Orangery is also only a few steps away.

Where art becomes an interactive experience

You'd like to meet the "big, bad wolf" in person at last, admire fascinating documenta art, learn more about Kassel's eventful history or experience the funeral and mourning customs of past centuries? Kassel's city centre has many attractive museums to offer, with collections and exhibitions that focus on a wide range of topics, and the best thing is: You can reach all of them on foot; they're only a few minutes away from each other. This also applies to the world-famous documenta outdoor works of art – from "Man walking to the sky" on the forecourt of Kassel central station (which is also used for cultural events) to the Obelisk on Treppenstrasse. Can't see the art for trees? You should also definitely watch out for oaks accompanied by basalt stelae throughout the city – as they are also an important documenta work of art...

Hot tips and ice-cold treats

Kassel's city centre is full of great ideas for irresistible culinary treats. The offers are as varied as the ambience in the numerous cafés and restaurants. How about some stylish time-out in the long-established Café Nenninger, which has already been in the business of spoiling guests with tempting tasty gateaux for over 100 years. At the Salotto 1828 on Opernplatz square, you can look forward to a relaxed ambience and free Wi-Fi, so you can share your Kassel adventures straight away via Instagram whilst enjoying hot coffee specialities and finger food. Fancy an ice cream? Then the Eislust on Friedrichsplatz square is a hot tip on hot days. You can also look forward to countless other tasty treats in Kassel's city centre – have fun trying and enjoying them all!

Shop, shop, hurrah!

A visit to a museum, followed by a shopping trip? You can perfectly combine both in Kassel's city centre! Obere Königsstrasse is Kassel's "Fifth Avenue" and the centre of the city's shopping world: Numerous specialist retail shops sit cheek by jowl on Kassel's main shopping mile, which is actually around one kilometre long. There are also attractive shopping centres such as the Königsgalerie and the Kurfürstengalerie, or City Point. The numerous side roads off the main shopping street also have a lot to offer. On Treppenstrasse, for example – which, incidentally, was Germany's first pedestrian zone – and in the Quartier Wilhelmsstrasse area, you'll find many more shops that sell anything from fashion and jewellery to lifestyle products, home electronics and cosmetics. Kassel's city centre also has a range of small, independent concept stores that sell unusual products to offer. So, who's going to carry all those wonderful new favourite pieces back to the hotel?

Wow! insider tip: Organ in Martinskirche church

Martinskirche church in the city centre is Kassel's largest church. One of Germany's biggest and most modern church organs was installed here in 2017. It has around 7,000 pipes and 86 stops, and not only produces an outstanding sound but is also well worth a look for its exceptional design.
