If you like plenty of greenery, you'll love Bad Wilhelmshöhe: The spa quarter in the city centre is not only the site of Kassel's natural brine baths and Kneipp health spa but also a popular residential area, as well as the city's most densely forested district, with three-quarters covered by the central part of the Habichtswald forest. On its hillsides, you'll also find the Bergpark with its famous historic water features. Whether its spa facilities, hiking trails or World Heritage site: There's a lot to discover in Bad Wilhelmshöhe!

With its smart period buildings, iconic cafés and unusual concept stores, Kassel's Vorderer Westen is one of the documenta city's trendiest and most popular districts. All around Bebelplatz square and along Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse, you'll find many unusual concept stores and iconic cafés, whilst the Goetheanlage park is a popular place to meet, especially in the summer. A mix of art, culture and urban life makes Kassel's city centre unique. You'll find many important museums here, as well as fascinating documenta works of art. In Kassel's main shopping street Königsstrasse, you can also shop to your heart's content. Plus, the district boasts plenty of cafés and restaurants that serve regional specialities as well as international delicacies. The idyllic Karlsaue park with the Orangery is also only a few steps away.

A northwards stroll along the banks of the Fulda river will lead you past the famous "pickaxe" sculpture before reaching the Drahtbrücke bridge. Cross the bridge over to the eastern banks of the Fulda, where you should definitely make time for a quick detour to the Bademuseum, the museum of spa culture and bathing, and the Kurbad Jungborn with its charming café with outdoor patio. After that, why not explore Kassel's eastern districts, where you can look forward to discovering some "lost places" as well as some surprising cultural and culinary treats.

Colourful facades and creative minds: Not far away from Kassel's university, you'll find the Nordstadt district, a busy hub of urban life the locals also call "Nord-Holland", due to its proximity to Holländische Strasse. This is the home of Kassel's subculture, with street art projects such as KolorCubes, the venue Kulturzentrum Schlachthof or the punk rock bar Mutter. However, gourmets also get their money's worth in Nordstadt, as it is also home to Kassel's urban bee farm and the Steckenpferd craft brewery.

06 City, park, river: Kassel's southern district Südstadt

The Südstadt, one of Kassel's most multi-faceted districts, is right next to the city centre. Art lovers will enjoy going on a tour of discovery around the numerous small galleries here, whilst the winding residential streets are characterised by an exciting mix of period and post-war buildings. The Karlsaue national park is the green heart of Südstadt. It runs all the way down to the banks of the Fulda, where you can relax in numerous cafés with views across the river.
