To pastures new:
Kassel's eastern district Osten

A northward stroll along the banks of the Fulda river will lead you past the famous "pickaxe" sculpture before you reach the Drahtbrücke bridge. Cross the bridge over to the eastern banks of the Fulda, where you should definitely make time for a quick detour to the Bademuseum, the museum of spa culture and bathing, and the Kurbad Jungborn with its charming café with outdoor patio. After that, why not explore Kassel's eastern districts, where you can look forward to discovering some "lost places" as well as some surprising cultural and culinary treats.

Go with the flow: Kurbad Jungborn

If you wanted to go for a refreshing swim in Kassel in the old days, you were spoilt for choice as there were several river-fed swimming pools. One of these was the Kurbad Jungborn right by the Drahtbrücke bridge on the eastern banks of the Fulda. Today, it is not only home to a café run by a collective but also to the Bademuseum, Kassel's museum of spa culture and bathing, which invites you to take an entertaining trip through the history of Kassel's public bathing facilities – from its river-fed swimming pools to the public baths where people could go to bathe in the days before indoor bathrooms, and indoor and outdoor leisure swimming pools of the kind we still use today. If your visit to the museum makes you long for a refreshing dip, you can of course also jump into the Fulda river there – or simply opt for refreshment in the form of tasty drinks and home-made cakes that are served on the café's cosy patio.

International delicacies

Whilst we're on the subject of sustenance: In Kassel's Osten district, you can work your way through a wide variety of German and international cuisine. How about the rustic specialities offered by the Sudhaus, for example, which are served inside ancient brew kettles or in its large beer garden. You can go on a culinary trip to the Orient at Al Wadi, whilst Foster’s Garden serves juicy steaks and burgers, as well as other typically Australian dishes. The restaurant al fiume right next to the Fulda offers Italian-style hospitality, and you can get a caffeine kick, as well as lots of tasty baked goodies, at the coffee roastery Kühn & Carter.

Cultural and industrial monuments

"Lost places" on former industrial sites, family-friendly residential areas and even picturesque groups of half-timbered buildings with an almost villagey character: It is this unusual mix that makes a stroll through Kassel's Osten district so captivating. The cultural life on this side of the Fulda river is just as varied: The Sandershaus hosts concerts and other cultural events all-year round; the hostel that is housed in the same building also offers affordable accommodation. Live music is also on the agenda of Kulturfabrik Salzmann e. V., although it is currently no longer located in the halls of the textile factory of the same name, an imposing industrial monument in Kassel's east, but has found a new home at the Kupferhammerhof, a former copper hammer factory, in Leipziger Strasse.

Wow! insider tip: Schleusenpark by the Fulda

Even though Kassel's old Fulda river lock is no longer in operation, the small Schleusenpark park right next to the banks of the river is worth a visit, especially on hot summer days. Relax and enjoy the views across the river whilst the kids have fun in the small playground.

Photography Tip Kasseler Osten:
Drahtbrücke über die Fulda

This hanging bridge has connected the western to the eastern banks of the Fulda river since 1870. Hundreds of couples have already left tokens of their love in the form of padlocks here, and the historic structure is also a popular, idyllic photo spot.
