Bonte façaden en creatieve koppen. Niet ver van de universiteit in Kassel in de Nordstadt, die ook wel ‘Noord-Holland’ wordt genoemd omdat ze zo dicht bij de ‘Holländische Straße’ (de Hollandse straat) ligt, bruist het urbane leven. Met de streetart-projecten zoals KolorCubes of Urbane Experimente, het cultureel centrum Schlachthof en de punkrockbar Mutter is dit het thuis van de Kasselse subcultuur. Maar ook levensgenieters komen in de Nordstadt aan hun trekken, want hier bevindt zich ook de imkerij van Kassel, en vlak bij de Pferdemarkt (paardenmarkt) de brouwerij Steckenpferd.

Beleef urbane kunst van dichtbij

Jarenlang is er in Kassel al een heel actieve graffiti- en streetscene, die op veel plaatsen in de stad de meest bonte sporen achterlaat. Het 'epicentrum’ van de spuitbus-kunstenaars vindt u in de Nordstadt van Kassel. Dit is het thuis van de streetart- en graffitiprojecten KolorCubes e.V. en Urbane Expiremente e.V. Samen met internationale streetart-kunstenaars heeft KolorCubes al meer dan 30 grote muurschilderingen (‘murals') gemaakt, waaruit een echte ‘Public Art Gallery’ is ontstaan. In Urbane Experimente e. V. hebben studenten uit verschillende richtingen zich verenigd om onbenut potentieel in de openbare ruimte artistiek te gebruiken, zoals de onderdoorgang aan de Holländischer Platz. Ook in het Nordstadtpark en op de campus van de universiteit ziet u al van verre al de kleurrijke kunstwerken schitteren.

Enjoyment from early to late...

When students have breakfast, it can sometimes become a bit later than usual. They are aware of this at the legendary breakfast café Nordpol, located near the university: here you can fortify yourself for the day until 3 pm – with more than 25 delicious breakfast creations! If you want to start off a sociable evening seamlessly afterwards, you should drop by Café Hurricane. Just opposite is the Schlachthof cultural centre, with its cosy BOREAL beer garden. Fancy a burger? Then head to the Chevy Diner, which offers a large selection of the American national dish. The motto of the Steckenpferd brewery on Pferdemarkt is that everything is really palatable, and the Kassel honey factory is also at home in North Holland. And if you only get to bed really late at night: You now know where you can still get breakfast in the afternoon...

Broadening your horizons

The cultural "menu" you can enjoy here is at least as varied as the culinary offerings in Kassel Nordstadt. In the Schlachthof cultural centre alone, concerts, readings, film evenings, and other events usually take place several times a week - in summer you can experience many of them outdoors in the BOREAL beer garden. The Färberei, the cultural centre of Kassel University, also offers a varied cultural programme throughout the year. If you prefer to party at Mutter's, you shouldn't miss a visit to the punk rock bar going by the same name, right next to Nordstadtpark. The Kulturwerkstatt Karnak sees itself as a free space for local and international artists, where a wide range of cultural events, ranging from jazz and punk to panel discussions are also on the programme.

Wow! Geheime tip: Schillerviertelfest

Eenmaal per jaar vindt in het Schillerviertel het straatfeest Schillerviertelfest plaats. Hier presenteert de populaire buurt zich in al zijn schitterende veelzijdigheid. Hier kunt u met mensen uit verschillende culturen, kunstenaars, studenten en nog veel meer anderen samen feesten, eten, drinken, genieten van livemuziek en nog meer.

Yesterday's fashions: Zweipunktnull

Are you into quirky second-hand gear and cool vintage styles? Then you should definitely pop into Zweipunktnull on Gottschalkstrasse. In a relaxed ambience near the university, around 1,000 pieces with vintage flair are just waiting to be discovered by you, to be tried on and, of course, to come home with you. On the hunt for your new favourite piece, you can immerse yourself in the past, as owner Sarah has sorted the outfits on offer according to matching places and eras. Zweipunktnull has now become a popular neighbourhood meeting place for the Nord-Holland locals. So why not pop in!
